Comparative Reproductive Biology is a comprehensive reference on the reproductive systems of domestic species. This book examines all aspects of reproduction, from the molecular structure to the overall physiology and medical issues.

The topic of gender is of great interest, as food production will be enhanced by the ability to control gender in food animal species. Food animal producers will benefit greatly from an abundance of female animals, and artificial insemination and embryo transfer are almost the norm today.

Birds are not included in this book, so the fact that female birds are the ones with the Barr bodies is also not included in this text.

The chapter on artificial insemination is extensive, ranging from cattle to cats. Likewise, the chapter on embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization is extensive. The chapter on cloning was especially interesting to me, and includes embryo splitting, blastomere dispersal, and nuclear transfer. Several important issues are touched upon as food for thought: repopulation of extinct or endangered species, gene alteration, and targeting specific genes.

The work in this field will be closely followed by human medicine researchers.

About the Author

Heide Schatten, PhD, is Associate Professor at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She is well published in the areas of cytoskeletal regulation in somatic and reproductive cells and on cytoskeletal abnormalities in cells affected by disease, cellular and molecular biology, cancer biology, reproductive biology, developmental biology, microbiology, space biology, and microscopy. A member of the American Society for Cell Biology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Microscopy Society of America, and American Society for Gravitational and Space Biology, she has received numerous awards including grant awards from NSF, NIH, and NASA.

Gheorghe M. Constantinescu, DVM, PhD, Drhc, is Professor of Veterinary Anatomy and Medical Illustrator at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Missouri, Columbia. He is a member of the American, European and World Associations of Veterinary Anatomists and also author of more than 380 publications, including Clinical Anatomy for Small Animal Practitioners (Blackwell, 2002) translated in three languages. During his career of over 50 years, he has been honored by numerous invited presentations, awards, diplomas and certificates of recognition.
