In addition to covering individual medical conditions, technical sections have been added to assist with such topics as: stocking the emergency drug cart; handling of controlled substances, use of analgesics/anesthetics; and application of local anesthetic techniques, to name a few.

While the manual’s objective is to act as a practical patient-side reference tool to facilitate medical management, pathophysiology and pharmacology information is included in order to provide a more complete reference and continuing education tool on emergency and critical care conditions.

Testimonials

"The second edition of this manual is a monster of a text. At more than 800 pages, it provides a comprehensive reference covering the assessment and management of emergency patients.

This edition includes chapters written by a number of authors, both veterinary surgeons and technicians, from Canada and the US, most of whom are specialists in their respective fields.

The book is not extensively referenced and has a degree of personal opinion. As this field is rapidly growing, this is to be expected and, in common with many veterinary fields, there are few absolute rights or wrongs in emergency medicine.

Nearly every possible condition in emergency and critical care medicine is covered, from aural haematomas to sepsis. The book starts with a general approach to emergency patients and is then subdivided into sections in alphabetical order, from abdomen to urogenital. This is further divided into chapters covering specific conditions.

Each chapter has a small introduction and then goes on to discuss diagnosis and management of the condition. A clear table of contents at the beginning of the book and a comprehensive index aids the location of information.

The management sections tend to be bulleted and are contained within a text box. These sections are concise and easy to follow in a stepwise manner. Different protocols are offered where appropriate.

Most chapters include a small section on pharmacology, containing useful information on drugs that may be used in the management of the condition. Finally, there is a short list of further reading for those who wish to learn more on the condition.

As the book is Canadian in origin, all units are given in both SI and traditional units so there is no need for conversion factors, although these are provided in an appendix.

Larger sections on fluid therapy discuss the pros and cons of various fluids available and the routes of administration, along with some background to fluid distribution within the body.

Usefully, there is a section dedicated to drug infusion charts with information on indication, compatibilities and incompatibilities, as well as to how to make up these infusions and at what rate to infuse them according to bodyweight.

Fortunately, the preparations of drugs available in the UK are the same strength as the drugs listed in these tables, so no conversions are necessary.

A section on emergencies in exotic species, including birds, reptiles, ferrets and rabbits, has information on common conditions in these species, as well as useful diagrams of intraosseous catheter placement in birds. Helpfully, these chapters include normal physiological values for those of us less familiar with these species.

Despite its size, the book does not contain many figures, but those that are present are beautifully drawn and clear. Black-and-white figures are used throughout and there are no photographs, probably to avoid increasing cost. ECG abnormalities are clearly depicted, using a large scale on a plain background. Surgical diagrams are easy to follow.

This book is designed to be a quick and easy reference to provide information on diagnosis and management of emergency conditions and it fulfils these aims superbly.

We have eagerly awaited this second edition for a number of years and it is a welcome replacement for the first edition. Despite the significant increase in size, it remains an extremely useful text, especially for the recent or new graduates at whom it is primarily aimed.

There are few books available in emergency veterinary medicine that contain so much information and, as such, it is useful for all who spend any of their time, or have an interest, in emergency practice."

"Karol Mathew's Veterinary Emergency Manual is *the* critical care book for all veterinarians and students. For any busy doctor, it will be your most reliable source of information. I found that the book helps you master and refine the important skills in critical care - making it easy to establish an accurate diagnosis and a quick plan of therapy. The book provides a comprehensive quick guide to critical care in an easy-to-find format. I loved the first Edition and now the 2nd Edition is even better!"
Larry P. Tilley, DVM, DACVIM (Internal Medicine)

"I have been eagerly awaiting the second edition of your "Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Manual". My copy of the first edition has been well used and I admit that I like books. The folks at Lifelearn told me I was the very first person to purchase a copy on Monday. I'm writing to tell you I think the second edition is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. Thank you very much for preparing such a wonderful text."
Tom Jackson
OVC 2000

"I just wanted to let you know that your ICU book has been a wonderful source of guidance since having started my internship last month. It is so easy to read with easy to follow step by step instructions. I use it almost everyday. Even the emergency doctors who have 5-20 years experience pull it off the shelves to consult. Two of my intern mates have ordered it online so that we can stop fighting over who gets to take it to which emergency clinic to use. So thank you once again for putting it together."
Andrea Lam, DVM
Carolina Veterinary Specialists

"Dr. Mathews again continues to set the standard for Emergency Medicine. This manual is one of the most important first references in our hospitals. It is comprehensive and precise and Lifelearn and Dr. Mathews have done an exceptional job with the quality of the layout and information provided. It is very user friendly."
D.V. Warren, DVM
