ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Gregory K. Ogilvie, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM (Internal Medicine, Oncology)

Dr. Ogilvie was a full tenured professor, internist, head of medical oncology, and director of the medical oncology research laboratory Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University (CSU) from 1987 until he followed his dream to join the team at California Veterinary Specialists (CVS) in 2003 as director of the CVS Angel Care Cancer Center and president of the Special Care Foundation for Companion Animals. Dr. Ogilvie continues to teach interns, residents, and veterinary students and has an active cancer research program. Dr. Ogilvie is also on the advisory board of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University in California and has been a full member of the University of Colorado Cancer Center under the directorship of Dr. Paul Bunn. During this 16-year period at CSU, Dr. Ogilvie spent 1 year on sabbatical teaching and developing new, innovative cancer therapies at the medical school and the Laboratoire Nutrition, Croisance et Cancer at the Université François Rabelais in Tours, France.

Dr. Ogilvie received his DVM from CSU and was in private practice in Connecticut before completing a residency at Tufts University/Angell Memorial Animal Hospital. From there, he joined the faculty as a professor at the University of Illinois before moving back to Colorado. Dr. Ogilvie is board certified in the specialties of internal medicine and oncology by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

He is coauthor with his friend, Dr. Antony Moore, of two other books, Managing the Veterinary Cancer Patient: A Practice Manual (Veterinary Learning Systems, 1995, in English, French, and Japanese) and Feline Oncology: A Comprehensive Guide to Compassionate Care (Veterinary Learning Systems, 2001); more than 200 scientific articles and chapters; and more than 120 scientific abstracts and posters. He has been awarded two international patents and $9.5 million in research as a principal investigator or coinvestigator. Dr. Ogilvie is the recipient of many awards, including the Arnold O. Beckman Research Award, the Beecham Research Award, the Purina Small Animal Research Award, the Samuel F. Scheidy Memorial Research Award, and the American Veterinary Medical Association/American Kennel Club Award.

Dr. Ogilvie has lectured to many thousands of students, veterinarians, physicians, and scientists in Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South America, and North America, where he shares his love for the practice of veterinary medicine and oncology. Dr. Ogilvie’s teaching skills have also been frequently recognized. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Teachers Award, two Norden Distinguished Teacher Awards, the MSD Agvet Award for Creativity in Teaching, and the SCAVMA Award for “Dedication to Students and the Profession,” and he was named Outstanding Companion Animal Speaker for 1999 at the North American Veterinary Conference.

Dr. Ogilvie has also been recognized with the AVMA Veterinarian of the Year (1995), the American Animal Hospital Association’s Veterinarian of the Year (1996), the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association Outstanding Faculty Award (1996), and the 1999 SHARE Human Animal Bond Companion Animal Award. Dr. Ogilvie was also awarded the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Hills Award for Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare for 2001.

When not caring for pets and their people, Dr. Ogilvie is a certified ski instructor and enjoys camping, scuba diving, and long-distance cycling. He has volunteered for 15 years as a counselor at the Sky High Hope Camp for children who have cancer. His greatest joys are his daughter, Torrie; his wife, Karla; and, of course, Cocoa the wonderdog.

Antony S. Moore, BVSc, MVSC, Diplomate ACVIM (Oncology)

Dr. Moore received his veterinary degree in 1981 and his master’s degree in feline hematology in 1986, both from the University of Sydney. After completing a residency in veterinary oncology at the University of California, Davis, in 1988, he joined the faculty at Tufts University. During his 15 years at Tufts, he achieved the rank of full professor and trained seven residents to careers in veterinary oncology. After leaving Tufts in 2003, he partnered with Angela Frimberger in establishing Veterinary Oncology Consultants (www.vetoncologyconsults.com), a Web-based consulting company that assists other veterinarians in providing the highest possible quality of life for pets with cancer and their human families by making evidence- and compassion-based recommendations for their care and providing educational materials.

Dr. Moore has spoken at meetings in the United States, Australia, Japan, Europe, and South and Central America. He is the author of more than 75 articles in the veterinary literature and has coauthored two other books with Dr. Gregory Ogilvie, Managing the Veterinary Cancer Patient: A Practice Manual (in English, Japanese, and French) and Feline Oncology: A Comprehensive Guide to Compassionate Care (in English and Japanese). Dr. Moore has received awards for creativity in teaching and clinical research and is particularly interested in the epidemiology of cancer in companion animals. His other interests include entomology and collecting antiquarian veterinary and butterfly books; he still likes the idea of running.
