Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health의 내분비학 과장인 Patricia Schenck박사가 저술한 가정식 가이드북입니다.

Donald R. Strombeck

Clarification: Calcium Carbonate

We’ve had some questions from readers regarding the use of the term “calcium carbonate,” which is listed as an ingredient in a number of the diets found in this book, and therefore wanted to clarify what is meant by this ingredient. Baking soda comes in two forms: sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. The sodium bicarbonate version is widely available as “baking soda” and is commonly used in baking, but none of the recipes in this book use it as an ingredient.  The calcium carbonate version of baking soda is sometimes sold as “baking soda substitute” and sometimes referred to as simply “baking soda.”

To avoid confusing sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate, any time the calcium carbonate type of baking soda has been used in a diet in this book, the ingredient includes the specific term “calcium carbonate.”  There are several manufacturers of calcium carbonate baking soda; for example, Amazon carries the Ener-G Foods product baking soda substitute. Calcium carbonate can also be sold for garden use, which is non-food-grade, so to avoid the use of the garden product in foods, the term “baking soda” was used in this book instead to indicate that readers should be sure to select a food-appropriate ingredient.

Baking soda can also be calcium carbonate. Sometimes it is referred to as baking soda substitute; sometimes it is just sold as baking soda. This is why the words calcium carbonate were included in any recipe using 'baking soda' so that the calcium carbonate type of baking soda would be used. Ener-G Foods sells calcium carbonate baking soda, and it is available through Amazon. I did not want to just list calcium carbonate in recipes as many people will opt for the cheap calcium carbonate for garden use, which I do not use. The calcium carbonate form of baking soda has only been added to diets where bone meal cannot be used. Bone meal is a source of both calcium and phosphorus, and so is not used in renal diets where phosphorus is restricted. The calcium carbonate form of baking soda has not been added to any diets that are already high in calcium; it has been added as a source of calcium in a phosphorus-restricted diet.

Diet is an important consideration in the care of a pet and is a major factor in health and life expectancy. Today, more pet owners are seeking out homemade diets and have the desire to cook for their pets. Many websites on the internet offer recipes for home-prepared meals. However, few of these recipes are known to be complete or nutritionally balanced.

HOME-PREPARED DOG AND CAT DIETS, SECOND EDITION (Wiley-Blackwell, April 2010) provides an introduction to nutrition of the healthy dog and cat and an extensive discussion of medical disorders that can be managed in part through diet. Presenting easy-to-follow recipes that can be prepared at home, the new edition has been completely rewritten to reflect the latest nutritional recommendations based on current research.

New chapter topics include:

  • Feeding the puppy and kitten
  • Feeding the pregnant or lactating dog or cat
  • Feeding the senior pet
  • Feeding the performance dog
  • The role of diet in pets with cancer

Diets are now listed together in a cookbook style for ease of use, and recipes are adjustable for any size dog or cat, allowing exact nutritional values to be calculated. Nutrient content for protein, fat, carbohydrate, and fiber have been provided for every diet, along with the nutrient density. A companion website features downloadable spreadsheets with complete nutritional breakdowns for each recipe.

Useful for both veterinarians and pet owners alike, HOME-PREPARED DOG AND CAT DIETS, SECOND EDITION is a unique handbook written by an expert in the field providing an introduction to the nutritional management of dogs and cats with easy-to-use recipes for home-prepared diets.

BOOK REVIEW

This is the book that the Veterinarians use!, April 16, 2010
Reviewer: Deborah Goodell
This is the book that the veterinarians use when suggesting diets for various health issues. Great information and lots of recipes for all sorts of ailments, allergies or skin problems. Belongs on every dog and cat owners bookshelf.

In-depth information on home-prepared diets!, April 30, 2007
Reviewer: Ann Dupuis / Your Dream Dog
This book, by Dr. Donald R. Strombeck, contains similar information to other “home-prepared meals for your dog” books that are written by (or with) veterinarians: an overview of canine nutrition, energy requirements, a discussion on the inadequacies of many commercial pet foods, and how a pet owner should go about preparing and feeding home-prepared meals. All that’s good and necessary, but the real strength of this book is the 200+ recipes, including recipes designed to aid in the treatment of several medical conditions including gastrointestinal disease, skin disease, obesity, renal disease, urinary tract stones, heart disease, and more. And oh, yeah, it contains all that information on feeding your cats home-prepared meals, too.
